Surgical Timeline
Follow a clear, step-by-step outline of what to expect before, during, and after craniofacial surgery. From pre-operative clinic visits and health checks to the day of surgery and recovery, this timeline helps families prepare, reduce uncertainty, and feel confident through each stage of care.
1–2 Weeks Before Surgery

Meet with the craniofacial team: learn about surgery, recovery, and sign consent forms.

Meet with anesthesia team (PASS Clinic): review health, check for airway issues, and make sure blood is ready if needed.

Extra tests or specialist visits only if your child’s history requires it.
After Surgery

Child wakes up in recovery. Labs are checked again.

Most children go to a regular hospital floor with close monitoring from medical team.

Some children may go to ICU if they had a complex repair, high blood loss, or other medical needs.
Day Before & Day of Surgery

Nurses check your child’s health. Surgery may be delayed if they are sick (fever, cold, vomiting).

Team meeting to review the plan and prepare for any challenges.

Antibiotics given before surgery. Labs and blood products are prepared.
During Surgery

Child is asleep under anesthesia.

IV fluids given to keep circulation stable.

Medicine may be used to reduce blood loss.

If needed, blood transfusions are carefully given based on lab results.
